Join our LinkedIn Group!

March 30th, 2009

One of the major takeaways for IMF at the recent Senior Executive Forum was the need to create more electronic networking opportunities for members.  The first step is the LinkedIn Group for Information Management Forum Members - we hope you’ll join.  We’ll follow this up with additional community and information exchange additions to the IMF member portal to give you better opportunities to share and connect with your peers in other IMF member organizations.

You can find the LinkedIn group here.

Please let us know if there are any other avenues that we can explore to make your IMF experience the best value in your organization’s IT budget!

Takeaways from the Senior Executive Forum

March 26th, 2009

The Senior Executive Forum was a great success.  Special thanks go to those that participated for the excellent discussion, feedback, and ideas for the future.  Extra special thanks go to our hosts at Harris Corporation - the facilities were top notch, the area was a great setting, and the company is both interesting and running strong.

We wrapped up the meeting with a simple question, “What is the single-most important idea or concept that you are taking away?”  Here is what was shared:

  1. Social Media MUST be a part of your IT strategy and within your scope of understanding.  Whether you know it or not, your employees are already using Twitter, Yammer, Facebook, and a host of other technologies.  CIOs need to understand these, and know how to use them for the organization’s advantage.
  2. Virtual conferencing and other Virtual World applications have a real future.  Private virtual worlds for company use have a place in the communication and collaboration strategies of the coming years, and the technologies are improving every day.
  3. Differentiating value from hype is becoming increasingly difficult.  Not every solution is right for every organization, but every cutting edge idea cannot be immediately discounted.
  4. Real cost savings opportunities can be found in outsourcing, technology upgrades, and strategy changes, but uncovering these requires a strong organization that is willing to complete the underlying hard work.

Here’s looking forward to another great CIO/Senior Executive meeting this fall!

Expense Reduction Activities that Work AND are Beneficial

March 25th, 2009

With a meeting focused on expense reduction, we’ve heard a lot of talk about the tough decisions that have to be made.  Being forced to reduce personnel is always a last resort, but is sometimes necessary.  Putting off key investments for business growth is a strange paradox, but sometimes unavoidable.

Fortunately, companies participating at the Senior Executive Forum have also found ways to reduce expenses with game changing technologies that improve company productivity and help avoid taking less desirable routes to meeting necessary budgets.  These technologies also position for growth at the same time with scalability opportunities and process streamlining.

What works?

  1. Integrated Phone Services - Fixed monthly fees, single number for multiple devices, easy swapping, no mobile phone number exposure.  This can reduce mobile bills dramatically and streamline directory services and phone usage.
  2. Workstation Virtualization - Reduced space requirements if workers can stay home, dramatic reductions in carbon impacts, reduced power consumption, better preparedness for disasters or pandemics.
  3. Server Virtualization - Dramatic power and cooling savings opportunities, warranty and replacement savings, space savings.
  4. Job Automation - Reduction in hands-on oversight needed, reduction in human errors causing job problems.
  5. Video Conferencing and Virtual Worlds- Productivity increases, huge reductions in travel costs, employee satisfaction increases, ease of usability.
