For legal reasons, we are not allowed to give too many details on Amit’s discussion. However, I can say it revolved around Verizon’s Connected Home service. While not live yet, it looks like it will be a big hit when it customers are given access. It allows you to essentially monitor most of your house through a computer or smart phone. Activate lights, alarms, locks, the thermostat, and energy levels just for starters. You would also be able to add on from a list of other services. Like I said, it looks exciting. Verizon homeowners should ready themselves for the wave of the future with the Connected Home.

June 9th, 2011Securing Future Applications
June 9th, 2011Here are some thoughts from Dr. Giffin’s discussion:
- Attacks from the desktop world moving into mobile environment
- In 2010, 20% of Android apps leaked private data
- Applications being evaluated must focus on what they do rather than what they are
- Carriers want to stop attacks because attacks against devices can turn into attacks against infrastructure
- Georgia Tech has developed labratory malware samples for Android apps in order to learn what this type of malicious malware is capable of
- Those samples were built to also test remote repair and learn Android internals and fundamentals
- Repairs included: device-side traffic filtering, process termination, file removal, device update/patch, and a hard reset
A report will be published on Dr. Giffin’s presentation in the near future. Up next is Amit Shahani from Verizon. He will speak on IT enabling product innovation.
